GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has appealed to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to reconsider his decision to quit the Bar Association as a member and continue to remain as its esteemed member.
The Chief Minister tendered his resignation as a member of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association on April 30, 2025.
In its letter to the Chief Minister, the association said that its executive committee unanimously resolved to humbly urge the Chief Minister to reconsider and withdraw his resignation in the larger interest of the institution and the legal fraternity. “It is a matter of immense pride and distinction for the Gauhati High Court Bar Association that a member of our Bar currently holds the highest executive office in the state,” the bar association said.
The bar association noted with appreciation the Chief Minister’s concern regarding the infrastructural limitations of the present high court premises and his commitment, as reflected in his letter, to resolving these issues through developmental initiatives exceeding Rs 1,000 crore, despite the financial constraints of the state.
In this respect, the bar association extended a few suggestions for consideration. The suggestions include the extension of the new annexe building of the high court complex to the riverside, its vertical expansion up to seven floors for larger accommodation without additional acquisition of lands, etc. The bar association further said that this might reduce the cost to Rs 70 crore.
