Guwahati: In a bid to enhance urban hygiene and aesthetics ahead of Independence Day, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched nighttime eviction drives targeting unauthorized stalls and vending units set up under flyovers and along footpaths.

The crackdown, which commenced on Thursday night, began in key locations such as Jalukbari and Ganeshguri. A special GMC enforcement team dismantled several makeshift food stalls, with the Ganeshguri flyover—long known for its clutter of illegal vendors—being a major point of focus.

GMC officials stated that these unauthorized stalls were contributing significantly to unhygienic conditions, with food waste being dumped openly, leading to foul smells, stray animals, and potential health risks. The encroachments were also obstructing pedestrian movement and creating traffic bottlenecks in already congested areas.

“Such drives are essential not only for beautification but also for safeguarding public health and ensuring safety in prominent city areas,” said an official. Both the Commissioner and Mayor reiterated the need for maintaining civic order, especially ahead of national celebrations.

The civic body clarified that only unlicensed and unauthorized vendors are being targeted. Licensed vendors with proper documentation will not be affected. Authorities also assured that rehabilitation measures for evicted vendors are under discussion.

Residents have largely welcomed the initiative, expressing relief over the removal of cluttered stalls that had long posed both hygiene and mobility challenges.

The eviction drives will continue across other parts of the city from August 1 onward, as part of a broader campaign to reclaim public spaces and prepare Guwahati for a cleaner and more organized Independence Day celebration.
