GUWAHATI: Guwahati is set to undergo a major urban makeover after important announcements were made at the headquarters of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).
The Mayor, along with the Deputy Mayor and GMC Commissioner, unveiled a comprehensive agenda for transforming the city's infrastructure, enhancing municipal services, and promoting environmental sustainability.
One of the key initiatives includes the handing over of water supply responsibilities from the GMC to the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB). To support this shift, residents can claim a subsidy of Rs. 9,500 for fresh 15mm diameter GJB pipe connections. This subsidy will also be offered to religious institutions, community halls and women's groups.
A joint survey by the GJB and GMC is currently in progress, with GMC water supply services set to cease on July 1, 2025. Citizens are encouraged to apply for the subsidy before the June 30, 2025 deadline.
In a bid to enhance urban planning, the GMC has launched a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based house numbering system for all properties. The survey has been completed in 27 wards, with the remaining areas expected to be finalized by year-end. Unique house number plates will be installed starting this month.
Also, the GMC has launched a property tax rebate scheme for residents with clean courtyards or urban forests, promising up to 10 percent rebate. An online application portal will be rolled out soon. The GMC also announced installing rainwater harvesting systems free of cost in schools and government offices, encouraging water conservation practices. In addition, the trade license system is being streamlined to enhance the 'Ease of Doing Business' in the city.
