Guwahati: Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia on Monday paid rich tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee on the occasion of his Martyrdom Day, describing him as a ‘torchbearer of true nationalism’ who fearlessly stood against the Congress party’s compromising ideology.

Speaking at a commemorative event, Saikia hailed Dr. Mukherjee as a visionary who laid the foundation of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh — the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized that Dr. Mukherjee’s life and legacy remain central to the BJP’s core values.

“Dr. Mukherjee was not only a statesman and scholar but also a staunch patriot who gave up a flourishing academic career for the nation,” said Saikia, recalling how he became the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of 33 — following in the footsteps of his father, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee.

Saikia noted that Dr. Mukherjee’s resignation from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet in 1950 over the Nehru-Liaquat Pact showcased his unwavering commitment to national interests. His staunch opposition to the special status of Jammu & Kashmir and his famous slogan — “Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan, do Nishan nahi chalenge” — continue to inspire the party’s actions, Saikia added, citing the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 as a fulfilment of Dr. Mukherjee’s vision.

“Dr. Mukherjee was arrested while attempting to enter Jammu & Kashmir in 1953 and later died in detention under controversial circumstances,” Saikia said.
