GUWAHATI: The Assam Book Fair is all set to kick off from December 27 at its new venue, the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati. The 12-day event, which will conclude on January 7, promises to be a treat for book lovers, with a wide range of books and publishers from across India and neighbouring countries.
The shift in venue from the traditional Assam Engineering Institute playground in Chandmari to the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara has been necessitated by the ongoing construction work on the GNB flyover, which has rendered the previous venue unsuitable.
Organized jointly by the Publication Board Assam and the All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers' Association, this year's fair will feature a diverse range of publishers and booksellers, although Bangladeshi publishers, who had a significant presence in previous editions, will not participate this year due to ongoing bilateral issues between India and Bangladesh.
Despite this, organizers are optimistic about the event's success, expecting an enthusiastic turnout of bibliophiles. Last year's fair had drawn an impressive crowd, with over 100 stalls and a significant representation from Bangladesh.
