GUWAHATI: The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) board of Kamrup (Metropolitan) district has designated 56 city routes where electric rickshaws will be banned. The decision aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve road safety by restricting slow-moving rickshaws on key thoroughfares.
The decision seeks to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety by restricting slow-moving rickshaws on main roads. Authorities will impose strict penalties on those who violate these regulations.
RTA Secretary Tamsin Aftab stated that the board will gather written feedback from those affected before enforcing the decision. "Objections and suggestions must be submitted in person or by mail at least 15 days before the publication," she added.
She added that the traffic police will work with the transport department's enforcement branch to ensure adherence to the rules. "Moreover, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation will install signages along these approved routes to help drivers better understand the restrictions," she said.
E-rickshaws are intended to provide last-mile connectivity in areas lacking alternative transport services such as city buses and shared taxis.
Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reveals that the Kamrup (Metro) DTO has registered 11,108 passenger-carrying e-rickshaws and 389 cart e-rickshaws so far.
