GUWAHATI: Assam marked the Birangana Sati Sadhani Divas on Monday, paying tribute to the legendary queen’s bravery and ultimate sacrifice for her nation and people. In Guwahati, various programmes were organized to commemorate the queen’s sacrifice. A day-long programme was held at the Sadani Bhawan in Patharkuchi, Borbari, where people gathered to pay their respects. The event commenced with the hoisting of the flag by Dibyajyoti Rajkhowa and Kundil Chutia, marking the beginning of the Sati Sadhani Memorial Day celebrations.
Speaking on the occasion, Manoj Kumar Das, general secretary of Chutia Cultural Development Centre, said, “Sati Sadhani’s story of bravery, patience, and ultimate sacrifice for her nation and people inspires us to overcome all challenges and emerge victorious in the struggle of life.”
Meanwhile, a memorial meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Gauhati High Court’s Senior Advocate Tarun Chutia. In his speech, Chutia said that the history of Sati Sadhani’s ultimate sacrifice has elevated the status of Assamese women in the global community, earning them a revered place through the ages. He called upon the new generation of Assam to draw inspiration from Sati Sadhani’s ideals.
Playwright Munmi Bordoloi Saikia participated in the meeting, highlighting Sati Sadhani’s life story. Editor Das delivered a lecture on the history of the Chutia community. The meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including senior citizens Anand Baruah and Ananta Neog and cultural activist Smritirekha Saikia.
The event featured cultural performances, including Dihanaam by the Bortila Shiv Mandir Dihanaam team and traditional dances by several groups showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Chutia community and other indigenous groups.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to Sati Sadhani, saying, “The bravery of the great Assamese woman will forever be etched in Indian history. Sati Sadhani’s sacrifice for her nation and people will continue to inspire generations.” Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also paid tribute, stating, “Sati Sadhani’s unparalleled courage and sacrifice have immortalized the history of the Chutia kingdom. Her dedication to her nation and people will continue to inspire us in our nation-building endeavours.”
According to historical accounts, Sati Sadhani, the last queen of the Chutia kingdom, sacrificed her life in 1524 to maintain her dignity and honour rather than submit to the Ahom governor of Sadiya.
