Guwahati: The recovery of the bodies of a man and a minor girl from the Brahmaputra River near Gaobura Parghat has sent shockwaves across the city, which is already grappling with a recent murder case. The deceased have been identified as Hirakjyoti Das, a married school vehicle driver, and a minor girl, an eighth-grade student, both resident of Garigaon, Guwahati. Their bodies were discovered under suspicious circumstances, just days after the girl had been reported missing.
According to reports, the girl went missing on Tuesday evening, and CCTV footage later captured Hirakjyoti taking her along. Following her disappearance, the girl’s family lodged an abduction complaint with the police. However, allegations of delayed police action have raised concerns about the handling of the case.
The girl’s body was identified by her brother, who recognized her clothes, anklet, and mehendi on her hands. Her face, however, was severely swollen and unrecognizable due to prolonged submersion.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Hirakjyoti Das, who frequently transported the girl to school, may have exploited his position to lure her. The exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear, and authorities are exploring multiple angles, including possible abduction and foul play.
