GUWAHATI: Chandmari police busted a chain of miscreants, right from small-time thieves to big scrap dealers, who supply stolen materials from Guwahati to various other locations in the country, including Delhi. The police recovered materials, to be precise, scrap materials, worth around Rs 10 crore set to be supplied to their destination in the rest of India.
According to the police, they received a complaint in connection with the stealing of three ACs on May 1, 2025. In the course of its investigation, the Chandmari police arrested a thief. Based on the confessional statement of the thief, the police raided a damp near Gitamandir, leading to the arrest of its owner, Nur Alam, last night. The police recovered 20 kg of stolen copper. They also siezed 5 kg of unused insulated copper wire, mechanical motor parts with wire, iron, rods, etc., weighing 20 kg.
The owner of the damp, Nur Alam, admitted before the police his involvement in theft by keeping stolen articles from various thieves. He further told the police that he used to sell scrap materials to a big scrap dealer – Binod Rai (Guddu Babu Damp) located at Maligaon.
The police then rushed to Guddu Babu Damp and recovered 2090 kg of copper articles, 332 kg of brass items, 21 kg of aluminium items, 100 gunny bags weighing 50 kg each and containing dismantled vehicle mechanical parts, 30 aluminium gamla, 174.48 kg of aluminium water taps and connectors, 56 kg of brass utensils, etc. The police arrested the owner of this damp, Binod Rai.
According to the police, the item recovered from the two scrap yards will be worth around Rs 10 crore.
