GUWAHATI: The Greater Guwahati Mini Bus Owners' Association (GGMBOA) has threatened to suspend bus services in the city for three months, even as city bus drivers, operators and members of the bus owners' association blocked the stretch of road from Khanapara to Ganeshguri here during the last two days in protest against seizure of several city buses for reported violation of regulatory rules.
The protest programme of the city bus operators resulted in scarcity of bus on the roads and created a chaotic situation among those who commute by bus in the city.
According to GGMBOA sources, the ultimatum has been issued because the District Transport Office (DTO) has seized several city buses on the flimsy ground of violation of various regulatory rules. The sources alleged that the city buses are being seized by the Transport Department whenever they ply on the roads and various fines are being imposed on the bus owners.
The sources said that they suspect that the Transport Department is seizing their buses to facilitate the success of the CNG-powered buses that were launched recently.
A few protestors alleged that the violations listed by the Transport Department were also being committed by ASTC buses, but no such action has been taken against them.
