GUWAHATI: Guwahati has enjoyed largely favourable air quality over the past week, with daily Air Quality Index (AQI) values ranging from ‘Good’ to ‘Satisfactory’, thanks to a spell of cool, rainy weather that has helped curb pollution levels.
According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on May 1, the city recorded an AQI of 88, falling under the ‘Satisfactory’ category. Although slightly higher than previous days, the figure remains within acceptable limits and marks continued improvement in air quality compared to earlier in April.
Between April 28 and April 30, Guwahati saw ‘Good’ air quality with AQI readings of 34, 44, and 49. The highest pollution levels in the last ten days were recorded on April 24, when the AQI reached 112, placing the air quality under the ‘Moderate’ category.
Experts attribute the improved air quality to recent weather conditions. Unlike many parts of India currently grappling with extreme heat and soaring temperatures above 44°C, Guwahati has remained relatively cool, with maximum temperatures hovering around 31°C. Regular spells of rainfall, overcast skies, and gusty winds have played a key role in dispersing air pollutants—particularly PM2.5 and PM10, which have seen elevated levels due to ongoing construction across the city.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued light to moderate rainfall in the coming days, which is expected to help maintain the current favourable air conditions.
However, environmental experts and authorities caution that these gains could be temporary. A shift to dry weather or a rise in urban emissions could quickly deteriorate air quality levels. Residents have been advised to stay informed and continue observing pollution-curbing practices, especially as construction and vehicular activity resume at full scale.
