Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a citywide eviction drive targeting unauthorized street vendors and makeshift food stalls, citing heightened security concerns in the lead-up to August 15.
The operation, which began late Saturday night, will continue until August 14. Key high-footfall areas, including the bustling Commerce Point, have already witnessed the dismantling of numerous roadside shops encroaching on public pathways. GMC officials stated that the initiative is aimed at clearing illegal structures to ensure smooth pedestrian and emergency vehicle movement, especially during the sensitive period around Independence Day. As part of new directives, all vendors and food stall operators have been instructed to operate only till 10 pm and to voluntarily dismantle their setups each night.
The civic body has warned of strict action against violators, including the immediate seizure of goods and equipment. However, officials clarified that seized items can be reclaimed from the GMC office upon furnishing valid proof of ownership.
The crackdown has also extended to mobile vendors, particularly falooda vans and other food vehicles, many of which are reported to originate from outside Assam. GMC has alleged that several of these vehicles operate without valid trade licenses and are engaged in unauthorized commercial activity using specially modified setups.
“We are taking these steps in the interest of public safety and city hygiene, especially during the Independence Day period when the security threat perception remains high,” an official said.
The move has drawn mixed reactions. While some city residents have welcomed the drive citing traffic congestion and hygiene concerns, affected street vendors have criticized the administration for disrupting their livelihoods without adequate notice or alternative arrangements.
GMC has urged all vendors to comply with the directives to avoid punitive measures. The civic body has also hinted at further checks and intensified surveillance across various sectors of the city in the coming days.
