
Guwahati: In a major step toward advancing geospatial technology education and research in Northeast India, Cotton University, in collaboration with the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), inaugurated a comprehensive ten-day training module on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. The training, hosted at the Physics Department's Conference Room, brings together students, researchers, academicians, and professionals eager to enhance their technical expertise in geospatial technologies.
The inaugural programme commenced with a warm welcome and felicitation of the esteemed chief guest, the Director General of NECTAR, and the guest of honour, the Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University. The ceremony was led by Sattyam Tripathi and Nikita Gogoi of NECTAR. The Registrar of Cotton University, Dr. Arindam Garg, delivered a compelling welcome address, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of both institutions in organizing the programme.
The Director of the Centre for Clouds and Climate Change Research (CCCCR), Cotton University, Dr. Rahul Mahanta presented an overview of the training programme. He underscored the vital role of GIS and remote sensing in addressing pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, urbanization, disaster management, and resource planning.
The Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University, Prof. Ramesh Ch Deka, expressed pride in hosting the training module, emphasizing the importance of equipping participants with state-of-the-art knowledge and tools to contribute effectively to regional and national development.
Running from January 21 to January 30, 2025, the training programme promises to deliver an enriching blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications. The programme will feature expert lectures, hands-on sessions with advanced geospatial software, and case studies focusing on Northeast India's unique environmental and developmental challenges, a press release said.
