GUWAHATI: It goes to the credit of the sleuths of Crime Branch that a fraudster was unmasked just within 48 hours after receiving a complaint.

Sources informed that the Police action was initiated immediately after Nabonita Koch, a resident of Forest Gate in Noonmati here filed a verbal complaint at the DCP (Crime) Office, Guwahati Commissionerate. She is wife of late Biraj Jyoti Koch.

The verbal complaint lodged on August 9 stated that a person, after introducing himself as Raj Bora, had taken Rs 3 lakh from her. He reportedly promised to Nabonita that he would be able to secure a job for her daughter as an LDA (Lower Divisional Assistant) in the PWD Department.

Of the amount, Raj Bora took Rs 2 lakh at her house in Noonmati. Subsequently, Bora collected the remaining amount of Rs 1 lakh from, Nabonita at Last Gate, Dispur.

According to the FIR, the complainant – Nabonita – only 'had the mobile number of the fraudster and no other details.

A case (499/21 U/S 420/506/294/509 IPC) was registered in the Noonmati Police Station; and the Crime Branch Team swung into action.

The initial technical analyses of the calls from the mobile number led to various persons whom the fraudster was trying to cheat; but his identity could not be traced. However, advance technical analyses narrowed down the identity of the culprit. He was finally apprehended from an area within the jurisdiction of the Satgaon Police Station on August 11.

Significantly, the Police succeeded in this case within 48 hours after receiving the complaint.

The real name of the fraudster, who was going around calling himself Raj Bora, turned out to be Baharul Islam — son of Zafar Ahmed, a resident of Ambari under Satgaon Police Station.
