GUWAHATI: Advocate General of Assam, Devajit Saikia, has tendered his resignation from the membership of the Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) due to differences over the proposed relocation of the High Court premises to North Guwahati.

In his resignation letter, Saikia stated that his constitutional and official duties required him to align with the decision of the Gauhati High Court and the Government of Assam regarding the proposed relocation.

Saikia mentioned that the GHCBA had taken a firm decision to oppose the proposed shifting and resorted to various protests and demonstrations. However, as the Advocate General, Assam, he felt it was his duty to support the decision to shift the present High Court premises to the proposed new location. “Personally also, I, without any hesitation, support the decision and process to shift the present High Court premises to the proposed new location,” Saikia wrote in his resignation letter.

The proposed relocation aims to provide a better and conducive environment to the legal fraternity, comprising lawyers, judges, litigants, registry, and multiple other stakeholders. Saikia emphasized that the new location would address the existing deficiencies and provide a better working ambiance for the new generation of lawyers.
