GUWAHATI: The District Library in Guwahati organized a special interactive meet with students and regular library-goers on World Book and Copyright Day, April 23, 2024, to make public reading spaces more accessible and reader-friendly. The event served as a platform for readers to voice their grievances and suggest improvements directly to library officials. During the meet, attendees openly discussed the challenges they face while using the library facilities. One of the most pressing concerns raised was the lack of basic amenities, including clean and functional toilets, safe drinking water, and free Wi-Fi. “The toilets are not usable, and it is very uncomfortable,” said one participant. Another added, “Free Wi-Fi would be a huge help, especially for those of us who rely on online study materials.” District Librarian Naba Jyoti Deka acknowledged the concerns and emphasized the importance of the overall library experience. “Often, we focus only on the books and resources we offer, but the overall experience of visiting a library is just as important. This meet was organised to bridge that gap—to hear directly from our regular visitors, especially those preparing for competitive exams, about what’s lacking and what can be improved,” Deka said. As part of the outreach initiative, free books from the library’s personal collection were distributed among attendees, a gesture that was warmly appreciated. Deka assured that the feedback collected during the session would be compiled and forwarded to the state government for further action.
