MANGALDAI: “Imagination cannot be awakened without the study of books,” said senior journalist Mayukh Goswami while taking part in the ‘World Book and Copyright Day’ celebration, held alongside English Language Day at Sipajhar College in Darrang district.
Organized by the College’s Library Book Club in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the English Department, a discussion session was held to mark the occasion. The session was inaugurated by the Principal of Sipajhar College, Dr. Barnali Sharma, and Librarian Dr. Nirmali Chakravarty explained the objectives of the programme.
In his keynote address, senior journalist Mayukh Goswami elaborated on the importance of World Book and Copyright Day, celebrated since 1995 under UNESCO’s initiative to honor the death anniversaries of renowned literary figures William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Garcilaso de la Vega. He stated that students cannot awaken their imaginative potential without studying books. He further noted that the day aims to promote respect for books and create awareness about protecting authors from plagiarism.
Explaining the Copyright Act of 1957, Goswami detailed how creators—including writers, poets, sculptors, singers, and playwrights—can legally safeguard their original works from duplication. However, he remarked that the enforcement of this law in Assam still lacks significant precedent.
The event also featured Associate Professors of the college, Imran Hussain and Dr. Prasanna Kumar Nath, who shared personal anecdotes to underscore the necessity of reading books. Dr. Nayanmoni Das, Coordinator of the IQAC, Dr. Papori Kalita of the English Department, along with the teachers, staff, and students of the college, also attended the celebration.
