GUWAHATI: A devastating fire broke out at a warehouse in Pamohi, near the ecologically sensitive Deepor Beel, late on Friday night, reducing goods to ashes. The warehouse was reportedly used to store VIP-brand bags.

The blaze, which is believed to have started around midnight, quickly escalated and raged for several hours. According to officials, at least 22 fire tenders were deployed from various stations to combat the flames as they engulfed the entire structure.

Despite sustained efforts by the Fire and Emergency Services, the fire could only be brought under control by around 10 AM on Saturday. However, several pockets within the warehouse continued to smoulder even after the main blaze was extinguished.

Preliminary investigations point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause of the fire. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. However, the scale of the damage is significant, with losses estimated to run into several crores.

Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. The incident has sparked concerns due to its proximity to Deepor Beel, a Ramsar-listed wetland and protected ecological zone.
