Guwahati: In a move aimed at addressing neighbourhood-level issues more effectively, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will soon set up 10-member committees, called Nagar Sevak, in every ward under its jurisdiction.

GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said each committee will comprise 10 residents from the respective ward, with the ward councillor serving as a link between the people and the civic body. “The idea is to identify local problems, find solutions, and monitor the implementation of works,” he said.

Waterlogging during the monsoon and potable water supply shortages have been identified as key challenges. “During monsoon, floodwaters sometimes take an entire day to recede. We want to ensure residents get timely support in such situations, and these committees will assist in relief efforts,” Sarania added.

On water supply, the mayor said the GMC is working with the Guwahati Jal Board to encourage piped connections by offering incentives. Free potable water is already being provided to religious institutions, and the facility is planned to be extended to economically weaker households.

Public response to the plan has been mixed, with some residents optimistic about the potential benefits, while others remain sceptical about its execution. The GMC plans to start forming the committees in the coming weeks to make governance more responsive and people-centric.
