GUWAHATI: In a bid to curb air pollution and maintain clean roads, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a stern warning to citizens against burning biomass, garbage, and other waste materials. The practice, which significantly contributes to air pollution, has become a growing concern for the city’s environment and public health.

“Burning biomass is a serious contributor to air pollution. We request all citizens to kindly not burn garbage, biomass, etc. Violations will lead to penalties,” the GMC stated in its notice. The corporation emphasized the adverse effects of biomass burning on air quality, highlighting the need for citizens to adopt responsible waste disposal practices.

In addition to tackling air pollution, the GMC is also addressing the issue of construction and demolition (C&D) waste being dumped on roads, which disrupts traffic and causes inconvenience to residents. The corporation has announced that it will actively clear such waste and impose fines on violators. “Construction and demolition waste blocking roads is a big no! GMC will clear such waste and impose penalties on violators. Let’s keep our city moving and obstruction-free,” the notice added.

The GMC’s directives align with its broader efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city. Residents are being urged to report any violations to the authorities and adopt responsible waste disposal practices.
