Several government offices in Guwahati functioned below par on March 31 — the last day of the financial year — with a section of officials and employees facing criticism for not reporting to duty on time and causing public inconvenience.
The lapses come during the ongoing enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) ahead of the Assam Assembly Election 2026, a period when government servants are expected to maintain stricter adherence to service norms.

The most pointed complaint has emerged from the Directorate of Women and Child Development in Guwahati, where a room containing essential child nutrition supplies reportedly remained locked and inaccessible until around 2 PM.
According to individuals present at the premises, the prolonged closure forced several beneficiaries — and workers associated with the scheme — to leave without receiving the assistance they had come for.
Those affected by the incident have expressed frustration over the lack of accountability and have urged the Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, to intervene and take appropriate action against those responsible.
During the MCC period, government servants are bound by strict conduct rules, and any dereliction of duty can attract disciplinary proceedings.
