Guwahati: State Minister of General Administration Department (GAD) Ranjeet Kumar Dass gave away the Lok Sewa Award and Karmashree Award on the Lok Kalyan Divas organized today in memory of the 75th Death Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium.
Taking part in the programme, the minister paid tributes to the Bharat Ratna and felicitated government officers and employees with the Karmashree and Public Service Awards, instituted by the Government of Assam.
In his speech, Dass recalled the invaluable contributions of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi towards Assam. He remarked that ‘had not Bordoloi strongly opposed the Cabinet Mission Plan’s grouping system that aimed to merge Assam with the then East Pakistan, it would have been difficult for Assamese people and the state itself to remain a proud part of India today.’ He stated that every grateful citizen of Assam must remember Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi for his historic leadership.
Recalling how the then Governor of Assam, Jayram Das Daulatram, conferred the title “Lokpriya” on Bordoloi, the minister also emphasized the need for every parent in Assam to introduce the life and contributions of this great leader to their children.
The minister also appreciated Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for instituting the Lok Kalyan Divas from 2022 onwards, aligning it with Bordoloi’s death anniversary, and for initiating the conferment of the Karmashree award and Lok Sewa Award to encourage government officials and staff.
