GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a strong appeal to residents, urging them to refrain from spitting in public places due to the serious health risks it poses, especially the spread of tuberculosis (TB).
In a public awareness message posted on X, the civic body warned, “You spit and move away, but the TB bacteria spreads. Please be responsible. Don’t spit in public. Embrace swacchata, keep diseases away.”
Health experts note that TB bacteria, which primarily target the lungs, can remain airborne for several hours after being expelled through coughing, sneezing, or spitting. This significantly increases the chances of transmission to others nearby. Apart from TB, spitting in open areas is also associated with the spread of influenza, other respiratory diseases, and unhygienic conditions that attract pests.
