Guwahati: Murchana Music Academy celebrated its glorious Silver Jubilee on Saturday with a grand cultural festival at the Sri Sri Madhavadeva International Auditorium, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. The celebration, held with great cultural fervour, was graced by renowned poet Nilim Kumar and Axam Xahitya Xabha’s executive committee member Kandarpa Kumar Sharma as special guests.
The event began with the ceremonial lamp-lighting by Academy Principal Hiranya Kalita, alongside Barnali Kalita, Jonali Das, Parag Deka, and Pallab Bhardwaj. A floral tribute was paid in memory of late Santoor maestro Pankaj Sharma.
Founded on January 1, 2000, Murchana Music Academy, located in Pub-Sarania, Chandmari, has been offering structured training in various musical instruments and vocal music. Under the leadership of Hiranya and Barnali Kalita, the academy has gained international recognition, nurturing talent through both offline and online platforms.
Anchored by Madhusmita Nath and Bipul Kumar Bora, the cultural programme began with a group performance of “Ejaak Soraai Uri Uri Jay,” composed by Hiranya Kalita and performed by students, teachers, and parents.
A highlight of the event was the conferring of the title ‘Sangeetacharya’ on eminent Assamese musician Deepak Baruah, who was felicitated with a certificate, a five-string violin, Phulaam Gamosa, Xoraai, and a commemorative memento
The audience was treated to a series of soulful and vibrant performances. From Bollywood classics like “Bahaaro Phool Barsaao” and “Hai Apna Dil To Awara” to Assamese favourites like “Sonor Khaaru Nel?ge Mok” and “Gaa Gaa Aji Gai Jaa,” students showcased a blend of musical genres. A violin ensemble led by Barnali Kalita presented Bhupen Hazarika’s “Kahowa Bon Mor Ashanta Mon” and Raag Hansadhwani, receiving overwhelming applause.
Performances by Bhargav Pratim Bhardwaj, Pragyashree Nath, Sukanya Sharma, Himashree Barooah, and junior students added rich variety and emotional depth to the event. Keyboard students further energized the program with tunes like “Tip Tip Barsa P?ni” and “Tomaar Ushah Kahowaa Komol.”
Students excelling in 2024 music examinations were felicitated with symbolic tokens of appreciation. A special recognition was accorded to alumnus Bipul Biswas, founder of String Rider Music Education School, Barpeta Road, whose students also performed at the event.
The celebration concluded on a rousing note as 32 guitarists came together for a collective rendition of Bishnu Prasad Rabha’s “Porajanamar Shubhalaganat Jodihe Amar Hoy Dekha,” marking a fitting end to the Silver Jubilee festivities, stated a press release.
