Guwahati: A delegation from the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Yuva Parishad (NBMYP) recently met with Union Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, in New Delhi to press for the inclusion of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community in the Central OBC list. The minister assured the delegation of positive steps towards resolving the issue at the earliest.
During the meeting held on July 30, the NBMYP submitted a detailed memorandum outlining recent developments related to the community’s long-pending demand. The Minister expressed his support and assured that he would recommend the matter to the Union Cabinet through an official note.
Further strengthening their outreach, the NBMYP team also met with Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), on August 1. They submitted supporting documents, including the earlier recommendation from the Government of Assam, the 2014 NCBC hearing report, and the ABCC socio-economic survey conducted in 2021 by the Department of WPT & BC. The submission also included records of cancelled appointments and discharges from central government services affecting members of the community. Following detailed discussions, the NCBC Chairperson assured the delegation that the matter would be resolved shortly and expressed his intent to visit Assam later this month to further assess the issue.
