GUWAHATI: The Guwahati police have caught a gang of thieves, recovering 13 stolen bikes and apprehending seven bike lifters. The gang, which operated with high efficiency, stole Royal Enfield bikes in just 45 seconds and smuggled them to Myanmar for resale.

According to ADCP East Anurag Sharma, “The operation against “The Hunter Lifter” was conducted on the orders of CP Partha Sarathi Mahanta and under the supervision of DCP East. We got some interesting facts: 13 stolen bikes have been recovered, and seven bike lifters have been apprehended.”

The investigation revealed that the stolen bikes from Assam were being handed over to a Manipur-based theft network through a local linkman. This linkman, who played a crucial role in the racket, was apprehended from Goalpara by the Dispur Police. The arrested persons are Gaingamlung Golmei and Heibokmayum Monouwar from Manipur’s Thoubal; Inamul Ali from Rangia; Nk Naga Naomi; Raju Sankhare; Leivon Sangte Kom; Muhammad Akbar; M. Nemneithem Haokip from Manipur’s Tengnoupal; Lunjapao Doungel from Manipur’s Churachandpur; Jangminthang Haokip from Manipur’s Kangpokpi; and Paomoija Haokip from Manipur’s Senapati.

Sharma added, “The operation has been conducted outside Assam, and the gang has been transported to Manipur. Two thieves were employees of Bus (transport) and a link man from Assam. The whole gang is from Manipur, and only one is from Assam. The first thief has been arrested from Karbi Anglong, where we recovered three stolen bikes, and other bikes were hidden in various places in Guwahati. The bikes were first hidden in Thoubal, Manipur.”

He further stated, “In some instances, as many as four vehicles were stolen in a single day in Guwahati. After the thefts, the vehicles were smuggled to Myanmar for resale.”
