Emphasis on cultural integration, local entrepreneurship, and tourism promotion
GUWAHATI: Assam’s largest and most vibrant festival, Rongali, is set to return for its 9th edition on April 4, 5, and 6 at the Veterinary College Ground, Khanapara, Guwahati.
Launched in 2015 as an initiative for transformation, Rongali has evolved into a grand celebration of creativity, cultural harmony, and local entrepreneurship. Dedicated to showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Assam’s ethnic communities, Rongali serves as a platform for artistic expression and tourism promotion. The festival has been instrumental in nurturing talents like globally acclaimed artist Shantanu Hazarika, renowned fashion designer Sanjukta Dutta, and celebrated musician Prabin Bora. Rongali stands out as a unique event in India, seamlessly blending culture, entrepreneurship, and tourism, drawing massive participation year after year.
This year, Rongali introduces a special recognition initiative – ‘Rongali Excellence Awards’, which will honour distinguished personalities from Assam’s literature, culture, entrepreneurship, and agriculture sectors. A large-scale exhibition will feature local products, including fish, eggs, indigenous handicrafts, and sculptures, emphasising the growth of Assamese entrepreneurship. Continuing its tradition of promoting local businesses, Rongali will host a 200-stall marketplace, offering authentic Assamese products. The festival will feature a dynamic line-up, including top Assamese and Northeast artists alongside Bollywood musicians. A special ethnic food competition and multi-cuisine offerings will present Assamese gastronomy in a captivating manner. Dedicated platforms for art, dance, and music will ensure an engaging experience for all generations. A massive showcase of Assamese folk culture will feature 1,000+ local artists, along with a grand fashion show, an art village, and a hip-hop village.
Rongali’s chief organiser, Shyamkanu Mahanta, reflected on the festival’s journey, stating, “Rongali started in 2015 amidst various challenges, but over time, it has gained the trust and participation of the media, government officials, and cultural icons. Despite facing financial setbacks in recent years, we have kept the festival’s entry completely free, ensuring accessibility for all. We firmly believe that Rongali will continue to move in a positive direction and become an even stronger cultural movement.” He further emphasised, “It’s heartening to see how the youth of Assam have embraced Rongali as their own. This year, we aim to prove that Assamese music alone can attract thousands of people. The festival will feature Assamese icons such as Tarali Sharma, Zubeen Garg, Neel Akash, Prabin Bora, and Arupjyoti Baruah performing alongside India’s leading hip-hop and Bollywood artistes.” This is stated in a press release.
