Guwahati: Ahead of World Sickle Cell Day on June 19, the North East Chapter of the Society of Fetal Medicine (SFM) has called for increased awareness, early screening, and community-led action to combat the burden of sickle cell disease in India.
This year’s global theme “Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy” highlights the need for grassroots awareness and advocacy to tackle the serious genetic blood disorder affecting nearly 20 million people in India. Dr. Apurba Bhattacharyya, President of the SFM North East Chapter, emphasized the urgency of public awareness and prevention. “Sickle cell disease causes chronic pain, anemia, organ damage, and infections. Raising awareness is essential, not just for treatment but also for prevention through early detection and genetic counselling,” he said.
Sickle cell anemia occurs due to a mutation in the hemoglobin gene, producing abnormal hemoglobin (HbS) that distorts red blood cells into a rigid, sickle shape. These cells can block blood flow, causing severe complications. Treatment includes the use of folic acid, hydroxyurea, pain management, and timely vaccinations. In many cases, regular blood transfusions are also needed.
