Guwahati: A special health camp dedicated to the welfare of frontline sanitation workers, popularly known as Safai Sathis, was successfully organised on Monday at Belortol, Boragaon. The initiative was led by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in collaboration with the Feedback Foundation and the Centre for Environment Education (CEE).
The day-long camp aimed at promoting the health and dignity of sanitation workers through comprehensive medical check-ups and awareness activities. The event began with a compelling mime performance by the group ‘Nirbaak’, highlighting vital themes such as hygiene, cleanliness, and the ill effects of littering.
A total of 57 Safai Sathis underwent thorough medical screenings, including Random Blood Sugar (RBS) tests, hemoglobin level checks, blood pressure monitoring, cancer screenings, and cough sample collections. Required medicines were provided on the spot based on individual diagnoses, ensuring timely medical intervention.
Senior doctors and health professionals from the Directorate of Health Services, Kamrup (Metro), facilitated the camp and were felicitated for their contribution.
As part of the event’s focus on environmental responsibility, around 14 kg of waste generated during the camp was scientifically disposed of. The initiative underscored the importance of regular health monitoring and environmental safety for sanitation workers who serve at the forefront of maintaining urban hygiene.
