Guwahati: State BJP president Dilip Saikia lauded Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s sustained efforts to reclaim forest land, VGRs (Village Grazing Reserves), government property, and culturally significant Xatra lands from illegal encroachment.
Saikia expressed strong support for the state government’s ongoing eviction drives. These operations, he said, were conducted in accordance with legal norms and court guidelines, with prior notices issued to encroachers. The eviction drives, spearheaded by the state administration, have targeted multiple locations, including the Kaziranga National Park, Pabhoi, Lamdinga forest region, Garukhuti government land, and tribal belt land in Sonapur. Similar operations were also carried out in Dhubri, Barpeta, Nalbari, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, and Karbi Anglong districts, where large swathes of forest and government lands were reportedly under illegal occupation for years.
“These lands belong to the people of Assam and must be preserved for future generations,” Saikia stated, commending the Chief Minister for ensuring due legal process and transparency in the evictions. Saikia also highlighted the government’s efforts to protect Xatra lands from long-standing encroachments. He specifically mentioned the Barpeta and Bordowa Xatras, which had reportedly suffered neglect during previous Congress regimes.
The BJP leader further welcomed the formation of the Xatra Commission by the state government. The commission was tasked with surveying the extent of encroachment on Xatra lands and recommending measures for restoration. Acting on the commission’s findings, the government has initiated steps to free over 15,000 bighas of Xatra land, a move Saikia hailed as a "historic milestone" in safeguarding Assam’s cultural and religious heritage. “The BJP government remains committed to protecting the state’s natural resources and spiritual legacy,” he affirmed.
