GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) announced a temporary halt in water service from January 3 to January 5 due to extensive interruptions caused by a massive water pipeline burst in the Kharguli area of Guwahati early on January 2.
The event happened at the Kharguli Water Treatment Plant (WTP) while they were getting ready to commission a recently construction surge protection tank. Preliminary investigations suggest that a pressure surge caused by a power interruption was the primary reason for the pipeline rupture.
Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, addressing the media, confirmed the findings and stated, “Experts had recommended the installation of a surge protection tank to prevent such issues. Unfortunately, the pipeline burst occurred during the system’s preparatory phase. Technical investigations are underway, and the Chief Minister has been informed.”
The GJB has stated that the water supply will be suspended to facilitate the repair work and testing of the surge protection system, which is expected to stabilize the city’s water infrastructure. Affected localities include Amiya Nagar, Chandmari, Rajgarh, Ulubari, Rupnagar, and its surrounding localities. There could be some leakage in the distribution network after re-testing and flushing of Joypur, Ramsa Hill, Silpukhuri, and Dighalipukhuri.
The district administration is assessing the losses due to the pipeline burst. The residents had raised the issue of water supply frequently and demanded better infrastructure measures by saying that a similar incident had happened earlier also.
The GJB apologized for the inconvenience and assured the residents that the restoration works were being done with all haste. The incident also brought to light the need for a robust water supply infrastructure in the fast-growing city.
