GUWAHATI: Guwahati is experiencing considerable traffic inconvenience along the Khanapara–Jorabat section of National Highway 27 owing to regular construction activities undertaken to improve road pavement quality.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) expedited work ahead of expected heavy monsoon rainfalls, which led to issuing a comprehensive traffic advisory by local authorities.
The construction process, despite being necessary for long-term road upkeep, has caused significant bottlenecks for traffic coming into Guwahati from Upper Assam and neighboring Meghalaya. In response to the growing inconvenience for commuters, the district administration has approved a series of strategic diversions and movement restrictions tailored to different vehicle types.
A key component of the new traffic management plan is the complete diversion of all goods-carrying vehicles destined for Guwahati from Upper Assam. These vehicles will now be rerouted at Kaliabor Tiniali, taking alternative routes through Sonitpur, Darrang, and Baihata Chariali to ease congestion at the Jorabat junction.
Besides, a time-restricted entry system has been implemented for Nagaon, Morigaon, and Meghalaya goods vehicles, permitting entry into Guwahati city limits through NH-27 during 10 PM to 6 AM only. Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) from Upper Assam are requested to avoid the Khanapara–Jorabat corridor and use recommended alternative routes.
The authorities are encouraging the public to comply with the new traffic rule and take guidance from the traffic personnel for safe and easier passage of vehicles amidst this period of construction.
