Guwahati: Veteran Government Physician Dr. Ramesh Chandra Barma Passes Away

Guwahati: Dr. Ramesh Chandra Barma, a veteran government physician, passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on June 24. He was 84.

Born on January 1, 1941, in the village of Sandheli near present-day Nalbari town, Dr. Barma was known for his amiable nature and kind disposition. Over the years, he earned immense respect and fame as a physician across various parts of Assam.

After completing his MBBS from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, he began his career as a Medical Health Officer under the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Assam. He served in several districts and was later promoted to the position of Senior Medical Health Officer. He went on to hold the prestigious post of Joint Director in the Malaria Section of the Health and Family Welfare Department in both Nalbari and Kamrup Metropolitan districts. Dr. Barma retired in 1998 as Additional Director of the same department.

Dr. Barma was immensely popular among his patients for his excellent diagnostic skills, compassionate care, and simplicity. He was particularly known for his dedication to serving the poor and the weaker sections of society, always extending a helping hand whenever needed.

His last rites were performed at the Nabagraha Cremation Ground, where a large number of relatives, family members, neighbours, friends, and well-wishers paid their final respects with love, flowers, and tearful tributes. He is survived by his four sons, daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren.
