GUWAHATI: Despite clear directives from the Kamrup (Metro) district administration regarding specific routes designated for e-rickshaw operations, a growing number of these vehicles are seen flouting the norms, raising serious alarm among commuters and residents over mounting traffic congestion and road safety hazards. E-rickshaws, which were originally introduced as a solution for last-mile connectivity, have now become a source of frequent disruption on major arterial roads such as Hatigaon and Beltola Road—areas that are explicitly marked as off-limits for these slow-moving vehicles due to their high traffic density.
The unauthorized presence of e-rickshaws on these busy thoroughfares has stirred significant public discontent. Anup Das, a daily commuter on the Beltola-Basistha Road, expressed his frustration while speaking to The Sentinel. He highlighted the dangers posed by the e-rickshaws’ erratic behaviour. “It is extremely dangerous. The e-rickshaws suddenly stop to pick up passengers in the middle of the road, causing chaos,” Das said, noting the noticeable increase in the number of these vehicles in recent weeks. He emphasized the need for a proper plan to ensure the safety of all road users.
Residents of Ajanta Path and surrounding neighbourhoods have also raised similar concerns. Many have reported daily incidents of near misses and traffic disruptions due to the unpredictable manoeuvres of e-rickshaws. A resident of Hatigaon recounted witnessing accidents caused by these vehicles weaving through dense traffic with little regard for rules. “We understand the importance of e-rickshaws, but they must stick to their designated routes. It’s a matter of safety for everyone,” the resident said, adding that the lack of visible regulation has left citizens feeling as though there are no rules being followed at all.
According to official notifications, the district administration has identified 31 specific routes within Kamrup (Metro) for e-rickshaw operations. However, the weak enforcement of these guidelines and the lack of proper monitoring mechanisms have allowed violations to occur with increasing frequency. The failure to ensure compliance has not only led to traffic bottlenecks but has also compromised pedestrian and commuter safety in several key areas of the city.
With public grievances growing louder, residents are now calling on the administration to take immediate and decisive action. There is a widespread demand for enhanced vigilance, stricter penalties for rule-breakers, and a robust system to regulate the movement of e-rickshaws within the city. While authorities have yet to respond formally to the latest wave of complaints, citizens remain hopeful that the rising concern will prompt stronger enforcement measures and bring much-needed order to the roads of Kamrup (Metro).
