Guwahati: The Viraasat Special Handloom Expo was inaugurated on Wednesday at Mahavir Dharm Sthal, M.S. Road, Fancy Bazar, Guwahati. The grand event was inaugurated by Pillai, Assistant Director, Handloom, WSC Guwahati, and Om Shetty, Chairman, Mahavir Dharm Sthal, Guwahati.

Organized by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, this week-long handloom extravaganza (January 8–14, 2025) aims to celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage while providing a platform for weavers to showcase their exceptional craftsmanship.

In their inaugural addresses, the esteemed dignitaries emphasized the significance of promoting sustainable and ethical fashion through India’s diverse handloom traditions. Pillai highlighted the role of such events in connecting artisans directly with buyers, ensuring fair trade practices. Om Shetty lauded the initiative for preserving and celebrating India’s cultural heritage while supporting the livelihoods of skilled weavers.

The Expo features a stunning array of handloom products, including Banarasi, Jamdani, Baluchari, Kosa, Muga, Eri, Ikkat, Patola, Maheshwari, Mekhela Chador, Kota Doria, Bhagalpuri, and Phulkari, among others. Visitors can also witness live weaving demonstrations, offering a unique insight into the intricate artistry behind these timeless creations, stated a press release.
