GUWAHATI: The Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) has begun the construction of boundary walls around Dighalipukhuri park as part of its current rejuvenation project. The development, however, has also concerned local residents who fear that the solid walls may block views and reduce the welcoming atmosphere of the park.

The citizen forum ‘Save Guwahati Build Guwahati’ has voiced its disapproval to the construction of solid walls, contending that this alteration could change the essence of the beloved public space. Satyendoloi, the general secretary of the forum, highlighted the significance of preserving the park's open environment, remarking, "Dighalipukhuri has always been known for its open and inviting atmosphere. Constructing solid walls will not only obstruct visibility but also reduce accessibility and take away from its aesthetic charm."

Local residents shared the same apprehensions, calling for considerate development aimed at ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in urban parks.

The ATDC has stated that the redevelopment scheme, which is budgeted at Rs 4.2 crore, will aim to upgrade the park's infrastructure and overall visitor experience as part of an overall effort to encourage tourism in Guwahati. To address the concerns, Padmapani Bora, Managing Director of ASTC, explained on social media platform 'X' that the boundary will not be made up of solid walls; rather, it will have visible metal grills at intervals of 15 to 18 meters, providing visibility and openness.
