Guwahati: A tragic fire incident at Kamakhya Nagar, Maligaon, claimed the lives of a woman and her young daughter in the early hours of Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Deepshika Chakraborty and her daughter, Sharmistha Chakraborty.
Initial reports suggested that a short circuit might have triggered the fire, but police later ruled out this possibility after inspecting the scene. A forensic team and police officials rushed to the spot following the incident. According to the police, local residents going for a morning walk noticed smoke and a burning smell coming from the Chakraborty residence and immediately raised an alarm. At the time of the incident, Deepshika and Sharmistha were asleep in one room, while Subrata Chakraborty, the father, was in another room. He woke up and opened all the doors and windows. The mother-daughter duo was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
During the investigation, police recovered cigarette butts from the scene and confirmed there was no evidence of a short circuit. They suspect the fire might have been caused accidentally, and the duo could have died of suffocation.
Speaking to the media, Subrata Chakraborty mentioned that a mosquito coil and mosquito incense sticks (agarbatti) were lit in the room. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. Further investigations are underway.
