GUWAHATI: Workers in factories, organised and unorganised factories across the state, including Guwahati, celebrated May Day with flag hoisting, meetings and processions today.
There are many places in Guwahati, like Noonmati, Betkuchi IOC, Betkuchi HPC, Fatasil Harijan Colony, Fancy Bazar, Beltola, etc., where the flag was hoisted at 8 am. The flag was hoisted by Comrade Chakreswar Kalita, one of the Vice-Presidents of our State Committee, at 9.30 am at the AITUC State Office.
Members/members of various unions then marched in procession from state offices to join the centrally organised joint assembly of trade unions. Comrades Sudhir Mahato, Ramen Das, Dhiren Baishya, Neelima Baishya, Ratan Singh, Shankar Shah, Jagdish Shah and others participated in the procession. The meeting was attended by Comrade Chakreswar Kalita on behalf of AITUC in the presidency of the Central Trade Unions. The meeting was attended by Comrade Ramen Das, General Secretary, AITUC Assam, and leaders of other central organisations.
This year’s May Day focuses on two main themes. Initially, all the workers condemned the brutal attack by the militants in Pahalgam. They also demanded the government immediately arrest the culprits and tighten security measures. They also called on all workers to unite against terrorism.
Secondly, they called for a nationwide general strike on 20 May 2025 on the basis of 17 demands to protect the rights of workers. The demands include repealing 29 labour laws, repealing four labour codes, restoring old pensions, raising the ESI ceiling to Rs 50,000 and raising the minimum wage to Rs 26,000 for unskilled workers, one of the specified. All the workers present pledged to continue their general strike on May 20 and their agitation at any cost to meet our demands. They promised to start preparing for a violent movement if necessary.
