GUWAHATI: Gauhati High Court issued a show cause notice to the state government regarding the remerging of Hojai District. Ziaur Rahman, spokesperson of Assam Jaitya Parishad (AJP) filed a PIL (26/2023) in Gauhati High Court against the remerging of Hojai district with the original district of Nagaon.

Earlier on Monday, a show cause notice was issued by Gauhati High Court, where a PIL was filed by Congress leader Dr. Sanju Baruah in connection with the remerging of Biswanath District.

The Assam Cabinet, in its first-ever meeting in New Delhi on December 31, 2022 took the significant decision to remerge the four districts of Biswanath, Hojai, Bajali, and Tamulpur with the original districts with effect from January 1, 2023. A notification to this effect was issued. As a consequence of this decision, the Biswanath district has been remerged with its original district of Sonitpur; the Hojai district has been remerged with Nagaon; the Bajali district has been re-merged with Barpeta; and the Tamulpur district has been remerged with Baksa. Bajali district was formed on January 12, 2021, while the districts of Hojai and Biswanath were simultaneously formed on August 15, 2015. Tamulpur district was formed on January 23, 2022.

In this regard, petitioner, Ziaur Rahman, told the media that the remerging of the districts is a one-sided decision and is illegal.
