Jonak Uday Road choked by illegal parking, commuters face daily ordeal near Guwahati police offices

GUWAHATI: A narrow stretch of Jonak Uday Road, located near the Police Reserve and the Police Commissionerate office, has become a major source of inconvenience for commuters, with vehicles parked along the roadside for prolonged periods, leaving little space for smooth movement.

The accompanying photographs show several heavy vehicles, tankers, cars and other vehicles occupying a substantial portion of the already narrow road. With vehicles parked on the carriageway, commuters are often forced to squeeze through the remaining space, causing inconvenience and raising concerns about road safety.

Daily commuters and local residents alleged that the problem has persisted despite the road being used regularly by motorists, pedestrians and residents of the locality. They said indiscriminate parking has effectively reduced the usable width of the road and frequently causes congestion, particularly when vehicles approach from opposite directions.

“The road is already narrow, but vehicles are parked here as if it were a designated parking area. During busy hours, it becomes extremely difficult for commuters to pass through,” said Babul Singh, a local resident.

Another commuter, Ishan Baruah, said the situation has become a “daily harassment” for people using the road. “We have to slow down, wait for vehicles to pass and sometimes move to the extreme edge of the road. This is dangerous, especially for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders,” he said.

Sanjib Pathak, another resident, questioned the lack of effective enforcement against roadside parking. “If such parking continues unchecked near an important police establishment, what message does it send to the public? The authorities should act before the road becomes completely choked,” he said.

Residents have urged the traffic authorities and the Police Commissionerate to conduct regular enforcement drives, prevent unauthorised roadside parking and identify a proper parking arrangement for vehicles.

They warned that unless the authorities take immediate action, the narrow road could become a persistent traffic bottleneck and pose serious risks to commuters and pedestrians.
