GUWAHATI: A small number of Manipuri people live in the capital city of Assam, and they staged a peaceful protest today in Guwahati, demanding the restoration of normalcy in the state of Manipur.
Following the incidents of severe violence that erupted in Manipur regarding the granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community, the Indian Army was called in to bring the situation under control. With incidents of violence and arson, more than 9,000 people were relocated to safe locations, and mobile internet services have been stopped in the state since Wednesday.
The Manipuri Coordination Committee in Guwahati today sat for a peaceful protest to express their resentment over the ongoing situation in Manipur.
A statement given by the committee mentioned the untoward situation prevailing in the state, mentioning that, "In this moment of unrest in the state of Manipur, the Manipuri people living in Assam, particularly in Guwahati, do condemn the barbaric acts of ethnic cleansing and communal clashes." "We do demand the immediate arrest of the culprits involved and get punished accordingly."
The committee also called on all the stakeholders in this matter to maintain peace and harmony at this time.
