GUWAHATI: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) along with Centre of Indian Trade Unions and All India Democratic Womens’ Association on Saturday staged civil disobedience demanding scrapping of the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), release of the prisoners and to stop privatization of public sector industries in front of the Assam Engineering Institute playground, Chandmari here.

The protestors said that decision against implementation of CAA should be taken in the Assam Legislative Assembly the way Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab etc have taken decision in their respective assembly. Claiming that the CAA is not only unconstitutional but also communal the protestors also demanded release of the prisoners arrested amidst anti-CAA agitation. The protestors said that they’ll never allow the government to impose oppressive police in order to stop the movement. Besides this the protestors also claimed that the government has taken many anti-people policies in the recent budget. Hence they demanded increment of budget in education and health sector.

The administration however detained the protestors including SFI leader Kashyap Choudhury, Sangeeta Das and many other students at the very moment they were about to start their agitation. The protestors were taken to the 4th APBN office situated in Kahilipara.

SFI leader Kashyap Choudhury said, “We’re out for a disciplined democratic protest but we’ve tortured in an inhuman way. We’ll never accept the CAA. Every state is taking proposal against the CAA in their assembly. One of the prime goals of today’s protest is to demand our government to follow other state and to take an initiative against the act. We demand the government to release the prisoners.”

One of the protestors said, “We condemn such acts of the government and police. They’ve jumped over the protestors in an inhuman way. We started the protest in a democratic way to stage civil disobedience. However, everyone has now witnessed the oppressive policy of the government.”
