'Nature Conservation Day' celebrated by Gauhati University NSS Cell

GUWAHATI: The GUNSS (Gauhati University NSS Cell) celebrated the 'World Nature Conservation Day' on July 28, 2021 through a webinar.

Welcoming the guest and participants, the Director of the Students' Welfare & Programme Coordinator (PO), NSS Cell, G.U., Dr Ranjan Kr Kakati said that conservation of nature is very important in the present situation when the Earth is fast losing its green cover even as the global temperatures are increasing. Dr Kakati mentioned about the initiative launched by GU NSS Cell to plant five saplings by each NSS volunteer as a step towards the conservation of nature.

Inaugurating the webinar, Regional Director, NSS, NER, Dipak Kumar, stressed on the need for conservation of Nature. He praised the NSS volunteers and also PO for planting saplings in their respective places. Chief Guest of the webinar Prof. Nilakshee Devi, Dean Faculty of Science & HOD, Botany, Gauhati University in her speech said that threats to wildlife, habitat destruction, over exploitation of forest resources, poaching, climate change are causes of destruction of nature. Prof. Devi said that education and awareness generation should be carried out in schools, colleges and local communities for conservation of nature and also emphasized on launch of alternative livelihood generation programmes for people dependent on forest for their livelihood.

Participating as Guest of Honour Dr Devid Kardong, Associate Professor, Zoology Department & PC, NSS, Dibrugarh University cited rapid industrialization, energy uses, agricultural practices, deforestation, livestock rearing and pollution as chief reasons of destruction of nature and emphasized on taking corrective measures to conserve the nature. NSS Volunteers Alangkrita Mahanta and Banashree Kakati also shared their views on the conservation of nature and the role of youth on it.

The webinar was moderated by Dr Lakhimi Gogoi, NSS PO, Narangi Anchalik College. About 250 participants comprising of NSS volunteers, Programme Officers, faculties throughout the country attended the webinar, stated a press release.
