GUWAHATI: Dispur Police on Sunday arrested GNRC neurosurgeon Dr Navanil Baruah for "helping model Rajkanya Baruah to avoid police investigation" in the hit-and-run case. He was booked under sections 201, 212, 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Dr Baruah's arrest came after three days of grilling by Dispur Police. During the interrogation of Dr Navanil Baruah, it had come to light that Rajkanya had sent WhatsApp messages to Dr Baruah, threatening to commit suicide if she was not admitted in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of that hospital. Dr Baruah also had telephonic talks with the State DGP (Director General of Police) regarding this case before admitting her in ICU.

Meanwhile, GNRC has issued a statement in the light of the recent developments. The press statement stated, "We at GNRC work relentlessly to ensure access to quality and affordable healthcare to everyone in the society, irrespective of their caste, creed, culture, and social and economic status. We don't refuse treatment to anyone under any circumstances as quality patient care is the prime focus for us at GNRC under the GNRC Affordable Health Mission."

It further stated, "Rajkanya Baruah approached the emergency department of GNRC Dispur at 2.30 pm on October 3, 2021 with multiple complaints following a road traffic accident. As per protocol, she was examined and assessed by our Trauma Team followed by required diagnostic tests. According to the treatment protocol and due to her injuries in the head she was admitted under the primary consultant of the Neurosurgery department. She was referred to the Department of Neuropsychiatry looking at her mental state. We, at GNRC, want to convey this stand to all the stakeholders of the organization and assure you all that all the treatment protocols and guidelines have been followed and we always abide by the standard operating procedure of a world-class heatthcare organization and respect the law of the land." Meanwhile, sources said that the process for bail of Dr Navanil Baruah has been initiated at Dispur Police Station.

Dispur Police on Sunday also issued show cause notice to Taj Vivanta, seeking CCTV camera footage and the guest list of the party that was held in the hotel on the night of October 1. The hotel management has been asked to submit the footage and guest list at Dispur Police Station.
