NIPER, Guwahati hosts national seminar on biologic drug

GUWAHATI: In an attempt to bridge the gap between the pharma industry and the academia and analyse various dimensions of Industry-Academia interface, a two-day-long national seminar via online mode was inaugurated at National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati on Thursday.

The title of the seminar "Development of Biologicals in India: Significance of Industry-Academia Collaboration, Regulatory Requirements, Challenges, Opportunities and Strategies" also lays emphasis on promoting private sector investments in R&D, stimulating public private partnership (PPP) with special focus on discovery of biologic drugs. The seminar is sponsored by Pharmaceuticals Promotion and Development Scheme (PPDS) Programme, Dept. of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.

The inaugural session was attended by Dr A Ramkishan, Deputy Drug Controller of Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), Government of India, as the chief guest, and Dr USN Murty, Director NIPER-Guwahati, as the guest of honour. In his speech, Dr Ramkishan said that the seminar will open up opportunities for the students to understand the industry requirements in terms of regulatory concerns and will help them grow into successful entrepreneurs with updated knowledge. Speaking on the same line, Dr Murty shared that NIPER-Guwahati looks forward to conducting such seminars and workshops in future to benefit the students from Northeast and other parts of the country.

The seminar is being attended by more than 850 students, researchers and faculty members from different institutes and universities from India and abroad, including around 400 participants from North East Region. Speakers from the pharma industry including Dr. Ranjan Chakrabarti, Vice President, United States Pharmacopeial, Hyderabad, Dr. Krishna Prasad, Vice President MJ Biopharma Pvt Ltd, Pune, Dr. Samir Sangitrao, Vice president, Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited, Mumbai, Dr. Vijay Nag Thota, Head-Regulatory and Technical, Hetero Drugs Limited, Hyderabad, Mr. Prathap Kumar Siddabathuni, General Manager, Stelis Biopharma Limited, Bengaluru, and from the academia including Dr. P. Radhakrishnan and, Associate Professor, NIPER Guwahati, and Dr. Sanjay K. Banerjee, Associate Professor, NIPER Guwahati, will deliver their sessions. The inaugural session was compeered by Dr. Krishna Undela, Asst. Professor, NIPER-Guwahati amidst the presence of faculty, staff and students of NIPER-Guwahati.
