Guwahati: The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has officially clarified that there has been no directive issued by either APDCL or the State Government to stop the installation of smart meters or revert to conventional meters, contrary to misleading news reports circulating in various media platforms.
Responding to growing confusion, APDCL stated that a recent internal order—now withdrawn—was issued solely as a temporary measure to expedite new electricity connections in rural areas where smart meters were not immediately available. This measure was never intended to signal a permanent shift away from smart metering.
Due to widespread misinterpretation of the order, and to eliminate any public confusion, APDCL has cancelled the directive altogether. The utility firm emphasized that the installation of smart meters across Assam will continue in accordance with the guidelines and regulations laid out by the Ministry of Power and the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC).
