Obituary: Prof. Sunil Borthakur (1947–2025)

Professor Sunil Borthakur, former Head of the Department of Physics, Cotton College, passed away on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Guwahati following a prolonged illness. He was 77.

Born in 1947, Prof. Borthakur completed his Matriculation from Jorhat Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School. He pursued his B.Sc. from Cotton College and later obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Gauhati University.

He began his teaching career at Mangaldoi College before joining Cotton College, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 2007. Following retirement, he continued to contribute to academia as a faculty member at Assam Down Town University.

A resident of Juripar, Panjabari Road, Prof. Borthakur was widely respected for his academic contributions and gentle demeanour. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, and a host of relatives.

His cremation was held at the Navagraha crematorium later in the day. His demise has cast a pall of gloom over the Panjabari locality and the academic community at large.
