Guna Chaliha, a prominent social worker, religious figure and veteran politician, passed away on Friday at his residence at Bakori Doloni, Balijan under Gohpur co-district after a protracted illness. He was 83. Late Chaliha was once a top leader of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He was the President of the Gohpur district committee of the AGP for one term and was also an executive member of the regional party’s central committee. He later left the party and joined the Congress. After joining the Congress, he served as the President of Chaiduar block Congress. He then left the Congress and joined the BJP.

He was the Member Secretary of Kalangpur Marketing Society. He was also elected two times as the President of Bakori Doloni Gaon Panchayat. He was a former Executive Member of the governing body of Chaiduar College. Besides, Chaliha was closely involved in various social and public institutions in the area.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, daughters-in-law, several grandchildren, and other relatives.
