Remaining apolitical, we'll back AJP: Sankor Jyoti Baruah

GUWAHATI: Spelling out the apolitical character of the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) its general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah has said that "staying away from electoral race we're going to back the AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) to give justice to the people of the State who are meted with political injustice".

In a face-to-face programme with the media at Dispur Press Club here on Thursday, Sankor Jyoti said, "I've taken the mantle of the AASU at a challenging time. I've plans to take the students' body forward in the days ahead. Ensuring secure future of students is what the AASU has been fighting for. Assam is such a State where nothing is achieved without agitation. Even students have to take to the streets for free-of-cost textbooks.

"I admit that we do take people's monetary contributions. It's a people's organization. Nobody can run a people's organization by selling his/her parental property. We take up various plans for the wellbeing of people with their monetary contributions."

When asked if the AASU is a factory for grooming future political leaders, he said, "It's a wrong perception. Of thousands of AASU leaders and workers, just 2 or 3 per cent take to politics. The rest are involved in various other activities in society."

When asked for comment on the AASU 'cautioning two chief ministers and other ministers groomed from the AASU', Sankor Jyoti said, "It's unfortunate. They forget the principles and ideology taught in the AASU after entering politics. We want to get rid of this evil. We've taken measures so that the future generation doesn't have to confront such situations."

When asked for comment that a section of people calls the AASU a political organization, Sankor Jyoti said, "Only an influential Minister terms the AASU political organization. He's one who was expelled from the AASU. We aren't here to accept his teaching."

When asked on AASU adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharjya, he said, "Nobody can match his three-decade-long service to the AASU as its guardian."
