GUWAHATI: The smuggling of hair from India goes on, and the destination is China. The Northeast is the corridor for this smuggling.
According to Customs sources, rag pickers collect hair, which fall while combing, from household women. The ragpickers hand over the collected hair to middlemen, who send it to hair processing factories in West Bengal and Bangladesh. The hair processed in the form of wigs for males and females, hair for toys, etc., mostly goes to China. Even the keratin obtained from the collected hair mostly goes to China for medical purposes. The smugglers sell hair at prices ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 25,000 per kg.
According to Customs sources, the smuggled hair collected from various places in India reaches Bangladesh via Meghalaya and China via Manipur-Myanmar and Mizoram-Myanmar routes. The smugglers also avail of the benefits of tonsuring in India relating to religious purposes.
